Incremental Changes

I got on the scale today. I am 7 1/2 lbs lighter than 2 weeks ago when I renewed my efforts to lose weight, 14 pounds lighter than 5 months ago.

Len says he can always tell when I’ve lost weight from my face. I lose my jowls. I still have them, just not as pronounced now.

I have two mirrors in my bathroom. The one on the door I think gives a true reflection because I look fatter in that one than I do in the one on the medicine cabinet. I use the door mirror as my gauge and can finally see an inkling of shrinkage in my girth.

There’s hope yet.

I Must Remember This

I must remember this the next time I want to come up with an excuse not to exercise. Being merely interested in losing weight doesn’t cut it.

What I’m Giving Up For Lent

Today is the first day of Lent. Deciding what I will sacrifice and give up for Lent is always a major dilemma every year because it is not easy to give up something enjoyable that you do often.  Len and I stopped by a restaurant yesterday evening for a cup of coffee trying to kill time until we had to pick up E from a math tutoring session. Of course, nothing goes better with a cup of coffee than something sweet, so I also had a brownie a la mode with chocolate sauce. Len was good and just had the coffee. Continue reading

Batman and. . .Gonzo

Ever since we lost our two long-time family pets, King and Fluffy, E has been asking (pestering?) us to get another dog. K wanted another one, too. They wanted a small dog this time. Small dogs live longer, they reasoned.

Len and I wanted another dog, too.  I don’t think he cared what kind of dog it was, but I wanted another big dog. Small dogs seem more like toys than pets. Plus, they bark
all the time. Continue reading

Weighty Matters

I am trying to lose weight. Again. I am on a mission for the umpteenth time to lose it. I have gained so much over the last decade that I now weigh more than I did when I was 9 months pregnant with my kids.

I lost all of my pregnancy weight after my son was born and with regular excercise I was maintained it for three years until I got pregnant with my daughter. I have never been the same since. Continue reading

Is Retirement Supposed To Be Like This?

Being retired takes some getting used to. I always thought I’d spend my time humming through the day, taking care of this and that, getting everything done that I wanted to get done.

Instead I’ve found that there is a tendency to put stuff off. I’ll do the laundry later, right after I finish reading this article on The Huffington Post. I’ll scrub the bathroom as soon as I’m finished reading Pioneer Woman’s latest post. Dishes? I think I’ll see what’s cooking on the Food Network. Continue reading

Last Day

Today was my last day of work. It was almost seven months ago when I was told that I would not be offered  a permanent job in the newly merged company. January 6, 2012, seemed like a long ways away. Although leaving was not by choice, I quickly came to believe that leaving was actually a good thing for me. This new company hasn’t stimulated any enthusiasm in me. Don’t get me wrong. It’s a good company. But I  just was not excited about this latest in a string of corporate restructures I’d experienced over the course of my employment. Continue reading
